When the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Beane in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, they also drafted linebacker David Mayo, safety Shamarko Thomas and defensive tackle Justin Houston.
Beane was a second-round pick from Virginia Tech who had never played defense before.
“He was a guy that you kind of looked up to,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said.
“I don’t think there’s a player in this league that played defense as well as him.”
Beane’s defensive approach is unique for a general manager.
The general manager’s job is to be able to make the tough calls and do things the right way to win games.
Beanes approach is a good example of that.
He wants to make his team better.
He does not want to have a bad game because he thinks his defense is good enough.
He will make every play count.
Beaning up on the run The Steelers defense has been one of the NFL’s most effective units over the past five years.
They’ve had an NFL-high 24 interceptions and have ranked in the top five in yards per game.
The Steelers have allowed just two rushing touchdowns through their first 10 games.
They have the league’s sixth-fewest sacks (27) and are tied for third in sacks allowed (33).
Steelers defensive tackle David Mayo is the team’s top run defender.
He has been a solid player on both sides of the ball.
He is an ideal player to be a defensive coordinator because he is willing to go up against any offensive line in the league.
“They know what they’re doing,” linebacker Shamarkos Thomas said.
When Beane signed the free agent contracts of linebacker Shamarksa Thomas, defensive end Shamark Jones and cornerback Dontari Poe, the Steelers thought they had a defensive line that could compete for a championship in the NFL.
Beans approach to playing defense is different than some general managers.
“A lot of GMs like to play the same type of defense over and over and they just want to play like it’s a game,” Beanes said.
The offensive line is Beanes favorite weapon.
He loves playing against the run, which is something most general managers do not do.
“The thing that I really like is being able to attack a team’s quarterback,” Beane said.
Beano has been criticized for spending too much on the offensive line.
Beani is the only general manager in the history of the league to spend more than $200 million on the line over the last five years, according to ESPN.
The money spent on the offense has helped the Steelers to go to the playoffs every year since 2010, the first year Beane took over the team.
“There’s not a better offensive line we’ve had than ours,” Beano said.
He thinks it is important to play in the right situation.
“It is the right time to do it,” Beans offensive line coach Kevin Colbert said.
Playing the right team in the wrong situation is Beanes way of getting things done.
He doesn’t just want his team to win football games.
He likes to win them.
“We have a very high-energy football team,” Beaning said.
That’s why the Steelers won five division titles under Beanes guidance.
He’s been the Steelers head coach for more than 10 years and has a winning record with four different teams.
He and his staff also have won a Super Bowl and two conference championships.
Bean’s philosophy of playing the game the right game has made him one of sports best.
He understands what it takes to win.
“If we have a chance to win and we can play defense, I think we’ll do that,” Bean said.
But he also wants his team win at home.
“When you win, it’s hard to not have that feeling of pride in your victory,” Beany said.
